Congratulations to Hull & East Riding A on retaining the Yorkshire u18s Team Championship title for a second year running. It was very close in the last rounds, with Leeds Blues actually drawing level with the champions on match points. However, Hull & East Riding A's early dominance and huge game point advantage saw them through to victory in the end.
This season also saw the launch of Division 2 of this competition, with Sheffield B emerging as champions in 2024. Sheffield B pipped Wakefield Wolves and York Knights to the Division 2 title as they were clear winners by a single match point.
We look forward to seeing this great competition expand even further next season as our impressive junior programme continues to develop new chess players across Yorkshire!
Yorkshire juniors were crowned the champions of the Northern Counties in 2024 as the Pennine Cup, held this year in Manchester, was brought back to the White Rose county for the first time in many years!
An impressively young team, captained by York's Aaron Rich, saw off competition from higher rated teams from both Manchester and Merseyside, in a competition of 16 teams composing the best young players from across the north of England.
Yorkshire A's team consisted of Aaron Rich (York), Sri Sasikumar (Leeds), Alex Burke (Holmfirth), Nathan Madzia (Leeds), Isaac Fossey (Holmfirth) and Benedikt Pitel (Hull).
Congratulations to Joe Varley of Hull & East Riding, who won this years Yorkshire Champion title with an impressive 4/5 in the recent 4NCL Hull Open. Joe finished joint 1st in the Open, out performing three Grand Masters in the process.
